CHANGE AGENTS

The work of Maryland women like Frances Ellen Watkins Harper to fight for increased equality continued into the twentieth century. Although women had been unable to secure suffrage with the passage of the Fifteenth Amendment, they didn’t stop speaking out—be it to the press, their legislators or anyone with working ears. Maryland women also continued the struggle to improve civil rights, regardless of skin color. Living conditions for African American people were harsh. While slavery may have ended, discrimination went on unabated. Although these were largely uphill climbs, these ladies were able to achieve impressive feats.
